The Top 5 Quarterback Needy Teams heading into 2013

This past year there was a fair amount of shaky quarterback play, particularly on the Cardinals, Raiders, Jets, Jaguars, and the Chiefs.  These teams are all QB needy teams; below I will list them in order of what team needs one more and who will start for them in the 2013 season.

1.)    Kansas City Chiefs- This team has a lot of offensive talent, mainly in the run game, their defense is shaky, but only 13 points a game which was dead last in the NFL during the 2012 season is not going to take this team anywhere.  Both Matt Cassell and Brady Quinn have shown they are nothing but career backups, Quinn showed this losing a game despite having the run game go over 300 yards (this was against the Colts).  With a solid running game and a QB that does not make too many mistakes this team could have a 10 win season despite a defense that ranked in the mid-20s in scoring defense.

QB heading into 2013: Geno Smith, West Virginia.  The Chiefs have the first pick and really need a QB, he can fill that role, with a run game that can pound out the tough yards he can rely on the run game and throw about 20 times a game.  By picking him the Chiefs can also focus on defense and cut ties with Matt Cassell who clearly is not cut out to be a starter anywhere.

2.)    Jaguars- Blaine Gabbert is just not a good QB in the NFL, he is to inconsistent and was probably a knee-jerk pick by the Jags in the 2011 draft with the lockout which pretty much forced this move.  Henne is not good either, he may have a small future in Jacksonville but he really is not the answer.

QB heading into 2013: Tim Tebow.  The Jags wanted him last year and now want him again, he is not a conventional QB, but he has won games in the NFL, and made the 1-4 Broncos the AFC West champs in 2011 and beat the Steelers in the playoffs.  He is a Floridian and he will add energy to a dying fan base.

3.)    New York Jets- Mark Sanchez has been just awful the past 2 seasons, 51 turnovers in 31 games, that is inexcusable.  He had 13 touchdowns to 18 interceptions this season, and had passer ratings of below 50 in 4 games this season, and an overall passer rating of 66.9 for the season.  Tebow was used in ways he should not have been and McElroy stunk it up.  I would say this team is first, but their roster lacks offensive firepower and really needs an overhaul.

QB heading into 2013- Michael Vick, yes he made a lot of mistakes last year, but he will go to a team that has a defense and he can also help in the running game, and will also add excitement to the fan base.  He has expressed interest in the Jets as long as he can be the starter and Rex Ryan will probably be more than willing to hand the keys to Vick after Sanchez has single handedly shot and sank the ship of the Jets.

4.)    Oakland Raiders- Carson Palmer is not the answer in Oakland, but sadly with the investment this team has put in him they really have no option but to hold onto him.  The Raiders continue to sign and trade for QBs that have no more left in the tank or who are running low, Palmer is just another example.

QB heading into 2013- Carson Palmer, the Raiders have a lot invested in him, and this year’s QB class is not that great in the draft.

5.)    Arizona Cardinals- Kevin Kolb, John Skeleton, Ryan Lindley, and Brian Hoyer (well let us give Brian a break) were terrible this year, they started 4-0 and then went 1-11 the rest of the way which is pathetic at best.  Larry Fitzgerald would be running wide open but nobody could get him the ball, not only was the quarterbacking bad but their offensive line was softer than a memory foam mattress.   But back to the QBs, I really cannot say much else other than that they were terrible, or “terrible” as Sir Charles Barkley would say. They only had a total of 10 passing touchdowns to 20 interceptions and 6 lost fumbles.

QB heading into 2013- Kevin Kolb, Andy Reid is probably going to land the coaching spot, he coached Kolb in Philly and Kolb will be familiar with the scheme that Andy runs.  I actually like this idea, and if the offensive line can be fixed and Kevin can get time to throw that ball this team can win 10 games in 2013.
