If I could vote for the 2011 NFL's Most Valuable Player award I would vote for Drew Brees hands down. He had a terrific year, he had 7 300 yard games, and finished the season off with 8 straight wins. But that was not all, he also threw for 46 touchdowns, and shattered Dan Marino's passing record for most passing yards in a season, and he only needed 15 games to break Dan's record. Drew Brees did not even take credit for his amazing season, he instead gave credit to his team and said they should embrace it and cherish the moment, Drew is a class act on and off the field. Drew may have have thrown a few more interceptions then Aaron Rodgers (Brees had 14 to Rodgers 6), but Brees went 13-3 as a started, Rodgers went 14-1 as a starter. Rodgers did beat Brees in the first game of the season, but it was close, the Saints had a great chance to tie things up at the end of the game. Brees did throw one more TD then Rodgers (46 to 45), yes Rodgers did not play the last game of the season, but what hurts Rodgers MVP chances was his back up Matt Flynn's performance this past Sunday against the Lions, 6 touchdowns, and he led the Packers to a last minute win. People will say its because the Lions have a bad defense, but okay this is the BACKUP not the starter, and yes he has the great weapons around him, but he was able to use the weapons, just like Rodgers has been able to. I do, however, do not want to take anything away from Flynn, because he is a great player, but he showed that he is capable of doing what Rodgers has been doing, also not to mention Flynn is the only player in Packers history to throw for 6 touchdowns, Starr, Favre, and Rodgers have never done this. While I think Rodgers had one of the greatest statistical years as far as quarterbacks go, I still think Brees is the better chance, Brees was much more consistent in his games, even the loses.
Brees also broke a record, and had the hot hand going into the playoffs, his completion percentage was also fantastic, he broke his own NFL record, and the new one is now 71.2%. He had 3 games of completion percentages over 80 %, and he also had 3 5 TD games, Rodgers had 1 5 TD game. If Rodgers was to win it, Brees should have the split with him, otherwise I think Brees should be clear cut winner. Rodgers did have a monster season, but I still feel Brees has the upper hand because he had a great running game behind him, a defense that caught on at the end of the season and he still was able to put up some huge numbers. Yes Rodgers put up large numbers, and he had no run game and his teams defense is suspect, but again Brees had a great running game and a defense that played well at the end of the season and he put up some similar numbers. So if Brees is blown out in the voting that would be unfair, it should be Brees as the MVP, or a split, but Brees deserves the MVP without a doubt.
