Vince Young announced his retirement on Saturday, marking the end of a career that was rocky. He fell out of favor with his coach Jeff Fisher in Tennessee and spent 2011 on the Eagles as the back up to Michael Vick, Young had to come in and play in 6 games that season, starting 3 of them. Since that he has failed to land a team and was recently cut by the Browns just days after they drafted Johnny Manziel.
Here are numbers from Vince Young's career:
60 games
50 starts
31-19 record as a starter
8,964 passing yards
1,459 rushing yards
46 passing touchdowns
51 interceptions
12 rushing touchdowns
40 fumbles
12 fumbles lost
Young was picked at number 3 overall back in 2006, he is going to be considered a bust because of his rocky career and sometimes spotty play. While I think he had potential to be something special it was not a great start for Young who played for Fisher who did want Young to begin with. Things took a turn for the worst in 2009 when Young disappeared after having a game against the Jaguars when he was booed, he was found after a search by the police. The only one who spoke out on what happened was his mother who said he was hurting.
He had some success with the Titans all the way until 2010 which was he last season as a Titan. It seemed like he had a bright future his rookie season when he almost took the Titans to the playoffs and fell just short when the lost to the Patriots. In 2007 he took the Titans to the playoffs.
2008 he started one game and was injured and Kerry Collins took over, Young appeared in just 3 games that season.
As mentioned in 2009 he disappeared for a few hours from his home but had success that season, he finished third in comeback player of the year voting.
In 2010 he could not finish the season due to injury and was released in July of 2011 by the Titans.
He played in 6 games for the Eagles in 2011 and that was it, he has not played another game since.
Young had so much potential to be something special in the NFL, but injuries, his sometimes spotty play and issues with coaching helped that come short. As much as I like Vince Young and he has a winning record in the NFL he will go down as a bust because he never lived up to his hype nor the responsibility of being a high first round draft pick.
Sure Young did some great things in his career, but at the days end, people will most likely remember his issues in the NFL, both on and off the field. If you ask me he will not get another call from an NFL team, his career is officially over....
